Newsflash

Sony's recent announcement of a line of SD memory cards is an interesting one, as we'll have to wait and see how this move by Sony affects the future of Memory Stick memory cards.

Sony is offering five different sizes of SD/SDHC cards and three different sizes of microSD/microSDHC cards. All of the cards will offer Class 4 speed for HD recording.

The SD/SDHC cards will range in size from 2 GB to 32 GB, carrying a price ranging from $14.99 to $159.99, while the microSD/microSDHC cards will range from 2 GB to 8 GB in size and from $14.99 to $44.99 in cost. (Compare Prices)

Sony has long stuck to offering only its own Memory Stick format for its camera and other consumer electronics devices. Sony made it a point to mention that the decision to begin offering SD cards will have no effect on Memory Stick media. However, with the popularity of the SD format across the consumer electronics industry, it doesn't take much imagination to think this could be the first step in a move to discontinue Memory Stick cards in favor of SD and SDHC. However, if any change regarding memory cards from Sony were to happen, it surely would occur several years down the road, so Memory Stick owners can breathe easy.
